Día de Muertos 2026 in Los Cabos: Altars, Festivals & Where to Celebrate

Día de Muertos is one of the most beautiful times to be in Los Cabos. For a few days at the start of November, altars fill with marigolds, candles and photographs, and both towns celebrate the people they remember with music, food and color. Here is what is happening in 2026 and how to enjoy it respectfully.

What is Día de Muertos?

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition — recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage — in which families welcome back the spirits of loved ones. November 1 is traditionally dedicated to children and November 2 to adults. Altars (ofrendas) are decorated with cempasúchil marigolds, papel picado, candles, pan de muerto and the favorite food and drinks of those being honored.

Día de Muertos in San José del Cabo · November 1–2, 2026

The historic center of San José del Cabo, around Plaza Mijares, becomes the heart of the celebration: community altars, catrinas, live music and traditional food. It is free, family-friendly and best enjoyed from late afternoon into the evening, when the candles are lit.

Altares en el Mar · Cabo San Lucas · November 1–4, 2026

A uniquely Cabo tradition: altars are placed on the water in the bay of Cabo San Lucas as a tribute to the sea and to those who are remembered. It is one of the most photographed moments of the season around the Marina.

Tips to enjoy it respectfully

  • Ask before photographing family altars or people in catrina makeup.
  • Don’t touch the ofrendas — the food and objects are offerings.
  • Try pan de muerto and hot chocolate from local bakeries — it’s part of the experience.
  • Go early: parking around Plaza Mijares fills quickly in the evening.

Where to eat after the celebrations

Staying around the Cabo San Lucas Marina? Traditional Mexican kitchens like La Chatita and Herradero, or tacos at Los Cabos Fish Tacos, are easy stops after Altares en el Mar. See all top-rated restaurants on the Marina.
